The Earth is round, yo!

We all know the story of Columbus, that when he set forth on his voyage landing him in the Americas, everyone thought he was going to fall off the edge of the earth. Or was it Magellan that was going to fall off the planet? Anyways, the truth we know about the Middle Ages is that everyone was an idiot and believed the earth was flat. Man, were they dense!

But here's something: it's a total myth! Seriously! Ok, maybe everyone is aware of the truth but me, but I seriously believed that prior to Columbus, everyone believed the earth was flat. Apparently, this is way off the mark, and was a myth perpetuated by a handful of academics in the early 19th century with an agenda to strip any scientific credibility from the church. And they did a pretty good job.

The truth is, Pythagoras of Ancient Greece, hypothesized that the earth was round as early as 500 BCE! Aristotle quickly followed this with his own observations of a round earth, as well as Euclid and Aristarchus. Amazingly, Aristarchus developed a heliocentric model of our universe around 300 BCE, placing the sun in the center. Those Greeks knew what's up!

This is a Roman copy of a Greek original made circa 150 BCE. Atlas has a globe on his back, not a pancake.

I just think the truth is so funny sometimes! There is of course is a lot more to be said on the subject, but no one wants to hear it from me. Do your own research and Read it from an expert!
