Written by brothers Derick Martini and Steven Martini, and directed by Derick Martini, “Lymelife” follows two 1970’s Long Island suburban families dealing with infidelity, financial issues and the hysteria following the onset of Lyme disease in suburbia.
Filmed on location in New Jersey, “Lymelife” is a delicate blend of humor and coming of age dramatics, pulled together by a stellar cast. Alec Baldwin, Jill Hennessy, Cynthia Nixon and Timothy Hutton play off each other wonderfully as two radically different married couples, who have more in common under the surface. However, it’s not the big names that make this movie great, but rather real life brothers Rory and Kieran Culkin who steal the film as brothers Scott and Jimmy Bartlett. Jimmy is running away from the confines of suburbia, while Scott is left behind to deal with his father’s infidelity, mother’s increasing unhappiness and his best friend’s father’s illness.
“Lymelife” is not a perfect film, and perhaps doesn’t provide anything new that hasn’t been seen in past suburban dramas, however it is by no means a forgetful film. Winner of the Discover Award at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival (for director Derick Martini), “Lymelife” is a wonderful, character driven drama and a must see.
