Vancouver 1k Coast to Coast championship

Okay so I just checked into a room at the Travelodge Inn here in Vancouver. The reason I'm up here is for a $1k three day poker tournament. So far I've survived day 1. This is one of the biggest tournament buy-ins I've played live, so I'm really excited. The blind structure is really good and you start out with 10,000, so I don't need to make any moves or anything quite yet. Here are some key hands of my tournament:

25-50:
THE VERY FIRST HAND I pick up AJ of diamonds with 10k in chips. I raised to 175 after a limper and the guy behind me cold called. The SB called and the limper called.

The flop came: Qd-Td-7c, which is a huge flop for my hand. The two people checked and I bet 400, the guy behind me made it 1k, and everyone folded. It didn't feel like he was bluffing and he was one of those macho tough guy fellows so I didn't think he was capable of folding a Queen here. So I called and the turn brought an 8 of clubs. I checked, and he bet 2k. So I figured if I hit a king, I double up, and if I hit a diamond, I win a big pot still, cuz like I said, I don't think he'd fold a hand. At this point I'm putting him on a strong hand like two pair or a set even. I called and the river brought a 3 of clubs. Ugh. I checked, he checked behind with KQo and he won the pot. So I was down to 6.8k in the first hand.

Three hands later a guy minraised to 100 UTG and I reraised to 300 with AK. Two people called and he called. Flop was 976 rainbow. Everyone checked to the button who bet 2k. The UTG raiser moved in for 10k with pocket sixes and the other guy called with tens. The turn was a ten and the sixes guy was down to 3kish.

He doubles up a few hands later and he's at 6k again. He makes it 200 and I have AK again and make it 600, he calls. The flop comes Kd-7d-9d. He checks, and I bet 800 with top pair and the nut flush draw. He shows the Jd and folds...

50-100:
So with these blinds I checked after 5 limpers with black 77. The flop comes 8s7d6s. SB checks and I make it 400. The button calls and the SB check raises to 2k with 3k behind. Now I had no idea what to do with the button calling. I felt I had the SB beat but wanted to make it look strong to the button who I had no idea what he had. So after a lot of hemming and humming I made the minraise to 3.6k total with 4k behind and the intention of calling all in vs. the BTN. He folded quickly and the other guy shoved and I called. I thought I was dead but he showed As9s and my hands holds up. Soooo sick. Now I'm up to 13kish.

It was nice to bust someone because I got a $50 dollar bounty! Weeeeee...

Every person here gets 50 dollars whenever they knock someone out with 25 selected "pros" for a $1k bounty.

75-150:
I don't remember what happened here much. Oh yeah, nevermind. lol

I made it 375 with KQo and the KQ guy called me. The aggressive button called and the BB called. The flop came: Ad-Jc-4s. And we checked to the button who checked. The turn came the 5d and the blind checked and I fired 800. Only the button called. At this I was putting him on a jack or some kind of draw. He had been talking up his game a lot in the first hour so I figured he wasn't very good and bluffed a lot. The river came gin. The ten of hearts rolled off and I had the nuts. I asked him how many chips he had and he said 5kish. I counted out chips like I wanted him to think I was weak, and I checked. He INSTA fired 3.5k and I moved all in for 1.5k more and he SNAP folded. He said "Good play" and I won the pot.

I think I was up to 16k at this point and then the first break happened.

100-200:
I smooth called a raise with QQ after a limper. The limper called and the flop came Kh-9s-4c. We all checked. The turn was a 9h and the limper checked and the raiser bet 1200. I thought and called. Other guy folded. The river came a 5s. And he checked. I felt like I had the best hand, and I bet 2250. He thought forever and I was confident he had like TT or JJ. He eventually folded.

150-300 with no ante I was kind of stagnant chipping up to like 20kish.
I called a raise with 44 and check raised 1200 to 3200 on a T-5-3 flop and took it down.

The 150-300 stage with a 25 ante I raised like 4 of the first 9 hands and won uncontested. I chipped up to 25k when this hand occured:

I made it 875 with AKo and a guy cold called between. The button made it 3.2k and everyone folded to me. I decided to reraise because I thought I had the best hand and he might fold tens or jacks to a four bet. I raised it up again to 11.2k and he moved in for 5k more. I called and we both had AK and chopped it up. He looked like he was a decent player so I thought there was a chance he could be bluffing on the button as well. But whatever, a chop was good too. :D There was another break and then we finally played the last 3 levels.

200-400 with a 25 ante was good to me. I made a play that was all on feeling. I made it 975 with 99 and the button called, who I thought was an aggressive donk. The flop came KQ4 and I checked. He QUICKLy bet 3500 and he had like 13k behind. I thought about it for awhile and thought he had to have me beat. But I kept telling myself that I should just be focusing on making the right play and if I thought I could get him off the hand, I should try. I thought and thought and he looked weak.

After about thirty seconds I moved all in and he snap called me with KK. Ooops.

Just kidding.

He thought about it forever, like 2 minutes and kept saying: "Do you have KJ, AK, QQQ, or JT?" At this point I knew he didn't want to put his whole tournament on the line so I felt a lot more relaxed. I was hella nervous too, and was probably emitting weak tells, but w/e, he was a newb. It felt like an hour later he finally folded. He said he didn't have a King, and that was that. Kinda spewy, but it worked.

300-600 50 ante. I kept stealing the blinds and got played back a few times and ended was around 35k.

400-800 50 ante. The last hand of the day the chip leader with 70k raised to 2200 and I was BB. Another guy called with 70k and I called from the BB and checked dark with JTo.

The flop came gin: AcKcQs. He bet 7k and the other guy showed his cards to his neighbor and folded. (Later it turned out to be AT.) I shoved all for like 32k thinking he hit huge to be betting into the other two stacks. He thought forever and ever and eventually figured out I wasn't bluffing the last hand of the day and folded a "Big ace". Bummer.

I ended the day with 44k and the blinds will be 500-1000 with a 75 ante. The average stack is like 30k, and there are 140 left. Top 40 pay. The real money starts with like 9 people left.

Apparently we play down to 6 tomorrow and the top six get to play on TV! I'm excited and hope that everything goes right tomorrow. I'm out of posistion on the two guys that can bust me (both with around 70k) but they seem like softies who will roll over unless they have the goods.

Anyways, that's it. First is like 90k. Wish me luck!

-Adam.
