A Mall on the Mainland [Monday afternoon]

Dec 17, 2012 14:00

Sure, Christmas had been in the air since...well, let's face it, mid-October. But Olive had somehow, aside from her excursion on Black Friday, managed to avoid a lot of it, and was still in dire need of a few gifts. And more upsettingly -- there were people, with whom she associated, who had never seen Santa. (What. Sia, are you real life? What ( Read more... )

This mall has everything that malls typically have, including cell phone kiosks full of guys who want you to switch to AT&T. RESIST.

This was geek nirvana. Victor couldn't afford to upgrade anything this Christmas, but he was going to look. And pet. And test. And play with everything. And ask the Genius Bar staff questions until they threw him out.

He started his fondling with a new iPad. Preeeeettty....

"Do you need moment alone with the iPads?" Olive asked, sidling up. "Feeling a little jealous of the way you're looking at that one, if I'm honest."

She wasn't serious. Mostly.

"No," Victor said defensively, and managed to quit caressing the calendar app to reach for Olive's hand. "I just hadn't played with the new ones yet. But I know which one of you I'm taking home."

Or ... back to the same dorm, as the case may be.

Olive squeezed his hand, grinning at him. "To be fair, I don't have nearly as much RAM or any app capabilities." She squinted at the screen. "They are cool, though."

And unfortunately just the teeniest bit out of her own price range, at the moment.

"Maybe I'll get a refurbished one on eBay," Victor said wistfully, but turned away from the display manfully and with hardly any twitching.

"How's your shopping going? I keep getting distracted by stuff I want for me."

Olive shrugged. "Most of it got done online awhile ago, which is good since I can't exactly shop for you or Jess or Sia with you standing next to me or anything, you know? Oh! That reminds me." She bumped her shoulder into his. "Um, what're you doing for Christmas, anyway?"

She was much more nervous asking him than she'd been when asking Sia. She blamed it on the fact that her father had never prophetically weirded out Sia and wouldn't be likely to do so a second time if she brought her home, or anything.

Victor shrugged a little. "Dunno. Probably I'll go back to LA, even if we aren't doing anything big. The dorms just seem like they'll be lonely, you know?"

"Mmm-hmm. Um...would you maybe like to come home with me?" Olive offered, biting her lower lip a little anxiously. "I mean, Sia is too, so it won't be like, weird, meet-the-parents-this-is-my-boyfriend-ish necessarily. But it'll be nicer than the dorms, and my parents kind of go all-out with cookies and Bing Crosby and the tree and all."

"Really?" Victor tried not to look too eager, could not keep his face from going puppyish anyhow. "With your brothers and everything? You want that?"

A family for Christmas. He hadn't had that since ... well, ever, really.

And that reaction made her feel a little more confident, so now Olive was grinning at him. "Uh huh. You can meet both my brothers, we'll do presetns and stuff, there probably won't be a party at Melody's but I have no guarantee....I mean, if you want."

"Absolutely," Victor said, still beaming. "It'll be amazing. A little intense, but amazing."

"Doesn't have to be intense. My parents are capable of dialing it back, and there'll probably only be threats from one brother," Olive replied helpfully. Because that was reassuring. "And this is Sia's first Christmas, so I'm getting everyone focused on initiating her. Part of why we're here actually. She has no Santa-exposure."

"Yeah, but then I have to seem cool to the little one, too," Victor pointed out. "It's ... good-intense, though. Promise."

He squeezed her hand. "Are you warning your folks Sia hasn't really done Christmas before?"

"Yes, but not why," Olive said, wincing. "Which means it might be a very interesting Christmas break. I'm leaving it up to you guys to explain stuff if you want. I'm happy enough letting my mom think Sia was raised in a cult, and for you, the android thing never has to come up if you don't want it to, though if it did they'd be cool about it once they wrapped their minds around it. It'd be a great way to get Chip to pretty much worship the ground you walk on, at least."

"Um." Victor suddenly looked uncomfortable. "I mean, if it comes up in conversation it's not a big deal? But ... kinda don't want to spend Christmas feeling like a science project. Is that cool? I can get Chip to worship me some other way."
