So today I took a chunk out of my finger with the chop saw, and that is something that we in the carpentry trade generally frown upon. No, I am still among the ten digit-ed and there was no visible bone and I didn't go to get stitches. Seems I tore a small patch out down to some sub-dermal tissue that was a clever and poignant reminder that it only takes a split second and that this sort of thing never happened to me at the library.

The chop saw or miter saw is a circular saw which can be maneuvered various angles and then you pull the trigger, engage the motor, and push down with a 'chopping' motion. Then you release the handle, the saw goes up, the motor disengages and in some miter saw models the blade continues to spin out it's momentum. Somehow after the still spinning blade went up I reached in for the wood, my hand too high. I think it caught my glove and *BANG!* my hand jerked, mouth cursed, and my brain started counting fingers. Assess the damage, no blood... yet... I had avulsion of the epidermis located on the proximal phalanx of my index finger of my left hand. Usually I just use tape but today there were band-aids.

Stupid stupid stupid. You get a little shocked and a little scared becuase you know that could be were your finger ends but I just applied pressure and a band-aid and then just cut something, anything, with the same saw so I wouldn't stay freaked out about it. Then I go use something else for a while very very carefully.

But I tell ya, wow, better than coffee for heightening awareness of what you're doing. Eyes on the blade, everybody.
