Making the most of a difficult weekend

So I flew into Chicago today for my Mom's birthday, which is this weekend.  Honestly, I wasn't too excited to come home.   I was looking forward to seeing my brother, my father and my aunt and uncle (who get into town tomorrow) but I was dreading seeing my mother--as horrible as that sounds.

Things are always worse than before every time I make it back to Chicago.  There is this ginormous wooden ramp that wraps around the back of the house.  This is for my Mom's wheelchair.  It's actually not that ugly of a ramp, but it wasn't there the last time I was home in July.  My Mom is also more frail than the last time I saw her.  It's honestly just really depressing me.  I feel like I have to get out of the house from time to time (and I'm not going to lie...I have a cigarette or two--even though I quit).  The important thing is that I help my Dad out as much as I can while I'm here. I'm sure he has urges to get out of the house--he's the one living here in Chicago all year round with my Mom.

Anyway, this weekend is going to be very low key. My brother and I grabbed a cab from the airport (he flew in later from Montreal). When we got home, we did a quick "hello" and than dashed out to Boston Market to grab some dinner for the family. (I've been eating crap all this past week...and been skipping the gym since my knee's been bothering me again--this will all change next week).  Today in Boston was this HUGE social activity/open bar at my job. I was upset that I was missing it but at the same time, felt that I had no choice. Family is certainly more important. Getting sloshed with coworkers happens enough as it is...it was the FREE booze thing I was regretting missing more than anything else :-) It's not every day that your job rents out an ENTIRE bar on Boylston Street for a night!

Tomorrow my aunt and uncle get into town from Maryland. It will be nice to see and spend time with them.  We're probably going to have another low key dinner (take out from our favorite local Chinese restaurant).  Friday night I have plans to go into the city to see my friend Fallon and her fiancee Steve.  They live in the Wicker Park area (I think?) and we're going to hit a couple bars in that area. Should be fun. I've been to their place but never been out in their neighborhood. I'm excited.

Saturday afternoon I'm going to hang out with my friend Cassie (coffee...shoe shopping...something!). Then later we are doing a dinner for my Mom's bday...my brother will be cooking, and myself, my brother and the aunt & uncle will be doing the shopping.  Some close family friends will be coming over for dinner and bringing a nice birthday cake. It will be nice and quiet with family and friends. Nothing too exciting.  Then...coming back to Boston on Sunday.

A nice long weekend...not the best time ever but I'm going to make the most of it. :-)
