Trick 'r' Treat - pt 1

Liddy Blake had lived across from the Winchester’s since Grace was a baby and she still wasn’t sure what the relationship between Grace and Cas Angel and the Winchester brothers actually was. For awhile, she’d thought Cas was their brother-in-law; Grace called Sam ‘Uncle Sam’, much to his brothers’ amusement, but now Liddy wasn’t so sure. She finished clipping the fake cat ears to her hair and quickly turned back to the window that faced the Winchesters’ front door where Dean, Cas and Grace had just emerged.

Grace called Dean ‘Dee Dee’ which could stand for a few things, but one in particular stood out as she watched the man in question situate flashing devil horns on Cas’ head then turn him around to pin a red felt tail to the back of his trench coat. There was a familiarity to their interactions that you just didn’t get with people who weren’t related, unless… Oh. Damn.

Castiel craned his eyes up to try to see the things Dean had put on his head.

“Dean.”

The hunter ignored him and looked to Grace.

“What do you think, Gracie?” he asked the little girl. “That a good enough costume?”

“Yeah!” she exclaimed, giggling then looked to Dean. “Now you.”

He grinned and reached into his pocket, pulling out a pair of fake vampire fangs and popped them in his mouth. He bared his fake fangs at Grace and growled. Grace burst into giggles and Dean held out a hand.

“Ready to go, angel?”

“Candy,” she sang, suddenly reminded of the purpose behind all the silliness and grabbed for her father’s hand, jerking him out of his contemplation of the felt tail attached to his coat.

Castiel gripped his daughter’s hand and allowed Dean to lead them around the neighborhood, the two of them hanging back on the sidewalk while Grace ran up to doors and knocked or rang doorbells. Her costume garnered a veritable avalanche of ‘oohs’ and ‘awws’, the two men on the sidewalk receiving their own share of looks. Dean preened under the appreciative female gazes while Castiel remained oblivious, watching his daughter collect candy from their various neighbors. Liddy Blake from across the street had an odd light in her eyes as she watched Dean and Castiel while Grace chose her candy. Frankly, the look kind of made Dean nervous. It was a look generally reserved for cute things like babies and puppies and stuff so the hunter had no idea why she would look at him and Cas like that. Dean perked up a bit when Liddy called to him as Grace made her way back down the sidewalk to Cas’ side.

“Hey, Dean.”

“Liddy.”

“So, I’m having a party later tonight.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“You think Sam would wanna come?”

Dean blinked, caught off guard.

“Er, I guess.”

She seemed to pick up on his confusion and quickly added.

“Oh, you and Cas are totally invited too.”

“We’ll, uh, think about it,” he replied hesitantly as Grace waved goodbye to Liddy and began trying to pull him and Cas down the street again.

Liddy smiled and waved them off, thinking what a cute couple those two made but they really should come out, keeping their relationship a secret probably wasn’t good for Grace. It’d give her the wrong idea.

Night had fallen and Castiel carried Grace as the three made their way back to the house. Grace’s halo and sack of candy, safe in Dean’s hands, were forgotten for the moment as she rested her head on her father’s shoulder, small hands absently playing with what looked like the empty air behind him. It had taken Dean longer than he cared to admit to realize that Grace could both see and interact with Castiel’s wings but it made sense, all things considered.

Dean amused himself with watching the felt tail sway back and forth behind the angel as the three made their way up the stairs to the porch and into the house Bobby had helped them buy. Sam was sitting in the darkened living room, watching some monster movie with the volume turned down, the half-empty cauldron of candy in his lap, while Bobby dozed in the recliner Dean had bought at a garage sale a few years ago. The younger Winchester glanced at them briefly then did a double-take, eyebrows inching toward his hairline as his gaze settled on the still-flashing red horns on Castiel’s head. His eyes flicked to his brother, then rolled dramatically when Dean smirked. Castiel ignored them both in favor of continuing through the living room and up the stairs to the bedrooms. Dean deposited Grace’s spoils on the side table before following the two.

Left alone in the dark, Sam shook his head, popping another mini-snickers into his mouth. Those two really needed to catch a clue already. They were practically married and didn’t even know it.

Castiel gently removed the fake wings from Grace’s shoulders before placing her on her My Little Pony comforter to remove her shoes and socks and exchange her white robes for the Barbie nightgown Dean pulled from her dresser drawer. The little girl hardly stirred through the wardrobe change, well and truly out for the night. Castiel arranged her small body so her head rested on the pillow and pulled the blankets over her before gently brushing her dark curls from her forehead. Even now there were times he couldn’t believe that he had been a part of creating this precious life and was still genuinely awed by the gift.

When he finally rose to go back downstairs, Dean pushed away from the doorway and knelt by Grace’s bedside, pressing a kiss to her cheek.

“Sleep tight, angel,” he whispered.

The two men left the little girl to her dreams, leaving the door open a crack to allow a little of the light from the bathroom across the hall to alleviate the pitch blackness, and suddenly found themselves in each others personal space in a way they hadn’t been in a while. Blue eyes met green and held. Dean blinked, realized he was staring at Cas’ lips and jerked his gaze back to the angel’s eyes then licked his lips, searching for something to say. A hand came up to rub the back of his neck as the silence turned awkward.

“Dean,” Cas said, voice soft and low and Dean felt a shiver work up his spine.

His eyes danced away then caught on the blinking devil horns that the angel still hadn’t taken off and the hunter smirked, reaching up to pluck the silly things from Castiel’s head, effectively breaking…whatever that had been and allowing him to take a step back. He smirked as Cas frowned at the things then switched them off and motioned toward the stairs.

“I’m gonna go check out Grace’s candy,” he said. “Make sure no real witches got their freaky hands on any of it.”

Then he fled. Castiel watched him go, head tilted in confusion, and Makala raised spectral hands to pull at her hair in frustration. When that only made her scalp tingle she shook her head and breathed an inaudible sigh before letting a small smirk curl her lips. At least the night wasn’t a total waste; the angel did look incredibly cute with that felt tail still hanging from the back of his coat.
