On Branding Bras, Branding Britney, and Branding Balls.

As I got my morning bagel at the café downstairs, the lady that runs the place (it’s a family business) was explaining to me that some of her customers were complaining about the Java Jackets they were distributing with hot coffee. You know-those handy recycled things that keep your hands from getting burnt while holding the paper cup. She gets ( Read more... )

Oh, Britney. What a trainwreck. I'm about to expose myself as the compassionate elitist I am, so bear with me.

I don't think Britney Spears is particularly bright. I don't think her parents are either, and thus, when she became a child star, no one hired smart people to shape her career. That continues today. She clearly gets bad advice, though I'm not convinced she didn't have a hand in that outfit she donned for that MTV performance. Here's why:

Britney's always kind of sold herself as a tramp. Whose fault? Hers, her mother's, her label's? Probalby a combo. Whether she was the coy Catholic school girl or the vampy, rubber jumpsuited "Oops I Did it Again" girl, or the one wrapped in a snake, she always used blatant and often vulgar sexuality to hawk her product. Problem is that, unlike Madonna, there was no substance or irony behind it. Our society is all about pushing women, young girls especially, as sexual toys for the masses. Britney became one of them and, I suspect, bought the line herself. So the fact that she looked like a hooker in that MTV performance didn't surprise me at all.

I don't pity Britney, but I do feel terrible for her. She's clearly mixed up with drugs, she's got the empty drug eyes, she seems like an alcoholic, and she's spiraling downward. AND on top of all that, she's got the entire world watching her do it and reveling in her demise. That's just sad to me. And it would take an entire personal transformation to bring her out of it. That's possible; many people have done it. But it's really hard.

Re: Marc Echo. That's hilarious.

Re: "Even I could make her a star."
You so could.
