"How am I?"

Apr 09, 2007 19:53

“how are you?” you ask.

well,
i’m reduced to writing poetry on grocery receipts
reduced to this sidewalk because my art doesn’t pay the bills
and our government doesn’t regard life as a basic human right
no, we have to pay for that one

from my spot in the peanut gallery, i watch
the characters of this millennium
order soy double shot non-fat vanilla lattes
hand over their five dollar bills
to support sweat-shop slavery & dictators

oblivious

textbooks tells us that
the Spaniards found Native women
“friendly and obliging”

everyone’s hiding behind their dark sunglasses
it’s hard to tell who’s who and what’s what
and where anyone stands
that is, when people stand at all

and it’s hard to wake up some mornings.

but i’m not too bad.

how are you?
