Galactica's #1 Threat
I saw this fan rant on EW about how they hate Lee because "all he cares about is appearing to be on the moral high ground" while in reality having "no integrity as a person."
Is it me, or are Lee's motives more suspect in fandom circles lately than even Gaius Baltar's?
This puzzles me. Is the idea here that Lee's principles are all an act? That he is never sincere? I don't know how one would reconcile this with the record of his actions (insisting upon elections since Roslin and Adama's power derives from a constitutional authority, trying to stop Adama's overthrow of Roslin's government, etc). Was that all...just a big pretense? One of extremely long duration?
I guess the "mindreading" approach can take you anywhere you want, but still. No character on BSG is without fault and this show takes you into a lot of grey areas, yet I hardly think this is the message they have been trying to send about Lee's beliefs. (If anything, I agree with Bamber's take that they might have made Lee too earnest and boyscout and sincere at times.) And Adama's sonny issues are equal to, if not greater than, the Dad issues Lee brings to the table, and while they are family, I'm tired of seeing people reduce their motivations to just that.
The serial misinterpretation of Lee also almost makes me wish we had constant voiceovers revealing each character's deepest inner thoughts in every scene. Wouldn't that be hilarious? (And maybe a big melodic montage at the end of the ep tying it all together! Galactica's Anatomy, anyone?) I could do a great picspam or crackfic or two out of that. Subtitles ahoy! Maybe the "Sonny Issues Theater" bit from KLG II, when Adama drags Lee in handcuffs into the CIC just to make him witness his lavish praise of Boomer.
