Gettin' down with Epic Narrative

Mar 29, 2008 10:53

A cool nonspoilery LAT article on BSG contained this wonderful quote at the end by Jamie:

"This is an epic show. This is more like 'The Iliad'; there are elements of epic poetry, Greek mythology, certainly, and the Bible. The issues are deep, and the stakes are high. You can't just serve onion rings at the end ( Read more... )

it's like the iliodyneiad!

Also loved his mockery of "The Sopranos" in the same breath. LOVED.

I know! :D I was so glad to hear the cast had the same worries when Ron went off in praise of the Sopranos ending ("That took BALLS!") because the first thought in my mind was also NO, RON. NO NO NO NO NO!

I love that someone on the writing staff reads Homer, though. BSG really needs more Homeric epithets. Like "slow-clappin' Adama." "Air-quoty Cavil." "Badly-sober Tigh."

The possibilities are endless!

HAHAHA yes.

He does have this fondness for "OMG shocking!" twists. I'm a little afraid that in the end the final Cylon will be Racetrack or Hoshi, just so he could crow: "I shocked you! See that?! I SHOCKED YOU ALL!"

And then Racetrack would have a lot of explaining to do.

You've got to love a man who's got the intellect (and education, bless him) to back the looks. Sometimes, the gods do give with both hands...

And seriously? Glad some of the actors have the measure of the show, and an understanding and knowledge of its mytholgical/epic sources, because I'm pretty sure not all of them do, from some of the clips I've seen on the web.

Plus, heck, I may be shallow, but I do like my pretty to have some good brains, and to be able to fantasise having some challenging conversation as well as mind-blowing sex. You know... ;)

I have to say I'm a tad taken aback by all the fanbashing in this piece. IMHO the journalists are looking for anything like that to put in their pieces. It's interesting how entertainment folks enjoy biting the hand that feeds them so darned much. Yet that's a terrific article, and Jamie's quotes are typically brilliant.

But why do I have this feeling that the next time I'll be seeing Bamber it will be in some awful TV comedy or a Slamdance indie pic? o_O

Also, very cool to hear Helfer talking about Tigh. *nods*
