a hilarious fb msg exchange between me and mick :

i have a dumb question about something i KNOW we learned in physics but i just can't remember it now. it's about water and ice... and what amounts are the same. basically i'm making iced tea and i am supposed to put 3 quarts of ice. but i don't want to. i just want to add cold water. so would i just add 3 quarts of water? or would i add less? or more?
i don't want to do an experiment where i put like 1C worth of ice into a cup and see if it melts down into 1C of water lol. thanks in advance.

lol you are ridiculous. well i remember ice expands when it freezes but i dont know specifically how much... not a significant amount, i dont think.
After that, it expands slightly until it reaches the freezing point, and then when it freezes it expands by approximately 9%.
bam there you go i just googled it lol. so if you need 3 quarts, which = 12 cups... so + 9% of that is approximately 13 cups :)

which is 3.25 quarts. (the measurement on my container).
THANK YOU

wait. so like. let's say i take exactly one cup of water. i put it in the freezer (in a 2C container). let it freeze. take it back out and let it melt. assuming there is negligible evaporation, are you saying that i would now have more than 1C of water?

lol this sounds like a trick question on a test.
no you wouldn't have more than one cup? it would expand to just more than 1c after you freeze it but once you melted it back down it would go back to the original amount, granted not much is lost in transition. i guess i'm not really sure if the whole expanding while it freezes principle is entirely true in the reverse but i would imagine so. i think it is. i feel like if it weren't that would have left a more WTF impression on my mind lol
think about putting a water bottle in the freezer. you always have to pour a little bit out before putting it in otherwise itll burst

thank you so much. this was a ridiculous exchange and reminds me of something i would read on "letters from an asshole" or something
