I have been writing since I was twelve-years-old. There has been a marked development over these past twelve years... slowly my skill has improved. I'm very proud of the project that I have been working on lately. I hope that... well, I hope that perhaps one day I will be a published writer. I know that the dream is elusive... but I hope to make it my reality.
However, lately, some people have been irritating me. Why is it that when a lesbian writes a story with a strong female character, she's a typical lesbian? Why is it when there's a strong female lead, it has a feminist agenda? What's so wrong with feminism anyway? Why can't you create a strong main female character without getting a ton of shit for it?
I did not intend for my main character to portray any sort of stereotypical feminist agenda... but she is a strong, badass female. I was going for more of a role model vibe. I want girls to maybe someday read through my main character's point-of-view and think that they can be that strong and stand-up. There aren't a lot of super excellent female role-models in many novels. The first time (that I can remember right now) I was truly exposed to strong females was through the works of some Japanese authors. Most novels I read have a strong male character and the supporting character is a weaker female. Or even if the female kicks some ass, she's overshadowed by her male partner. He's the one telling her what to do or what to think.
I don't mind reading novels with strong male characters. Some of my favorite literary characters of all time are male, and I don't decry this form of writing... but I wanted to do something else.
So I am sick of hearing how I'm writing some sort of feminist propaganda. Women should be treated equally to men. Why is writing with a female whose badass equivalent to propaganda? Shouldn't it just be treated as fact?
