I read it yesterday. I didnt put it down until I finished. I am still not sure if I liked it. It took too long to get into. The beginning was dull, and almost a pain to read. But, once I got a few chapters in. I gained interest. By the end, I didn't want to put it down. It wasn't really a thriller or anything. it was another one of those...philosophical books. I wanted to highlight so many things, or at least bend the pages. But I couldn't,it wasn't my book. (thanks for lending it to me taylor). I guess, for that reason (wanting to highlight so much) it was a good book. There was a lot of "and alls" and "helluvas" or "sonuvabitches".haha. and everytime he said one of those. I almost wanted to put it down, it was so annoying. but boy. when he was explaining the meaning of the title. "the Catcher in the Rye" I was almost speechless.
"Anyways, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this bigfield of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around- nobody big, I mean- except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but It's the only thing I'd really like to be."
I found it kind of funny that he was so quick to judge. he either considered everyone to be stupid or intelligent. there was no in between. when he would start up conversation with a complete stranger. he would decide, then and there. and he considered almost everyone a phony, I just wonder how he got to that point. what made him care if anyone was intelligent or not. I dont know. but I want to.
When I read this book, I was so connected with the character, that I actually started taking note of everything he was saying. I would stop, and think it through. and wonder how he came up with his thoughts. His thoughts on girls for example seemed so rediculous, but true.
"the trouble with girls is, if they like a boy, no matter how big a bastard he is, they'll say he has an inferiority complex, and if they don't like him, no matter how nice a guy he is, or how big an inferiority complex he has, they'll say he's conceited."
Its weird because his life wasnt much of an adventure, he just made it into one. He made everything seem much more exciting than it actually was. It was all pretty much every day stuff, that he just somehow found the words to make interesting.
"the mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one"
overall, good book. If you haven't read it, you should.
