AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I thought my heart had healed a little since the episode aired, but no! I'm still bleeding and crying and bargaining with unseen higher powers to reunite our darling boys! OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!
This episode was totally subtitled "The Love Story of Merlin/Arthur", BECAUSE IT WAS DAMN IT! There was so much going on I can't even! *flails*
And the others! Gwaine! *sob* My poor darling! As devastating as it was, I thought his end was rather a throwback to the legends, where Sir Gawain was often a bit reckless and stubborn (see him determinedly fighting Lancelot day after day and getting his ass kicked until he was dying from it). He and Percival went after Morgana knowing they had no defense against her magic, hence why they were all stealthy and shit, but still, she has magic and they had pointy mortal swords. Yeah, it's probably a miracle that Morgana didn't just cut Percival's throat before she started playing with her favorite knight.
The quiet, unassuming girl without any magic or social standing ended up being the strongest of them all.
I totally burst into a fresh wave of tears over that one line. Because look at our OT4 in the Before & After:
Before Arthur - spoiled, thoughtless brat Merlin - bumbling, silly boy Morgana - bright, happy (if a little arrogant at times) ward of the King Gwen - stuttering, humble girl
After Arthur - noble, wonderful BUT DEAD king Merlin - mostly wise BUT UTTERLY BROKEN warlock Morgana - fucking crazy BUT DEAD witch Gwen - strong, stalwart BUT ALIVE queen
*clings to OT4* YOU BROKE ME YOU FOUR! OMG SOMEONE HOLD ME! *weeps*
