Score! Picked the finalists again. Go Benji! Marty is totally stoned. Andrew G even managed to insert "hazy" into a sentence to him, which cracked me up but everyone else ignored. Stoner Idol FTW!
Sarah - Well, she has a good story - the chick who was told she "wasn't right" (read: "too fat, but not enough to make it a selling point") so she went away and practiced her singing on a treadmill until she was Idol's version of acceptable, whatever that is, and here she is. Cinderella came out in a pretty dress and sung pretty well, but I'm so over power-voices and ballads and want something different this year.
Morgan - This was the girl I thought was hella cute in photos but couldn't remember from auditions. And this is why. *g* She has the tv-acceptable emo chick image *down*, but then goes on to struggle through an Alanis song for some bizarre reason. I still think she's cute.
Holly - Good version of "Easy". And I *like* that she hasn't come out all dolled up in a prom dress or skank wear (as most girls have) because that wouldn't have suited the song. Jeans and t-shirt girl FTW! I like her new hair, too.
Madison - Cute young girl sings an Avril ballad. Well, she's in for sure, even without hearing her sing. ... ... Oh, well that didn't got all that well at all. *cringes* I don't get the judges, though. Madison acts too old for her age, but Lana acts her age and gets canned for it. Meh, I still think she's in on the teen vote - just like Lana.
Brianna - I've been waiting for this all week! And she *did* sing Fidelity! (where did that rumour come from originally, I wonder - I didn't hear anything about any of the other performances, but everyone knew what Brianna was going to sing before she got up on stage. Odd.) She made it cute and fun and, yeah, a little twee, but this is your chance to show that you actually *have* a personality and in our fifth year of this show, I'm looking to be *entertained* by people like Brianna and Husny much more than I want to sit through an hour of screaming ballads and vocal gymnastics each week. I just love her. I love her voice and her look and her candy-coloured aura. And I love her mum for making the frocks.
(B gets more paragraphs because she's so awesome) And Kyle was as predictable as we thought he'd be. Y'know, I do think Kyle often has a point when he says that he doesn't know certain songs or "get" alternative acts, because this competition *is* unapologetically looking for a popstar, the likes of which he'd play on his Top 40 radio show. Traditionally, alternative and indie stuff has belonged to Triple J and their Unearthed competition. But I think by now, those lines between pop and alternative have been sufficiently blurred - for every Christina Aguilera, there's a Missy Higgins. For every Robbie Williams, there's a Ben Lee. Artists are crossing the Triple J/commercial radio divide, and maybe Kyle needs to look outside his little box sometimes to see what could be coming instead of waiting for trends to be half over before jumping on their bandwagon. So when Kyle said he didn't "get it" and Brianna said, "I don't expect you to..." the crowd, judges and even hosts (bless 'em) erupted because they can all see that, too. She wasn't even trying to be mean or defensive, because I'm pretty sure that if she hadn't been drowned out by all the cheering and back-slapping, she would have continued with "because your place in the industry deals with top 40 pop acts, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I think the audience is ready for something different now." James was right - Brianna was worth the price of admission (if by "price of admission", he means "sitting through the entire competition")
Rosie - Look, I just don't think she deserves this. She had her chance on UK Idol, didn't win, so conveniently moves to Australia in time for our version. And if she was going to convince me, it had to be more special that that oversung piece of boringness. I'm a fan of the alliterative name, but Rosie Ribbons still doesn't do it for me. And she *does* look older than 24.
Tips: Madison and (optimistically) Brianna. Holly and Morgan for the wildcard (Holly because she deserves it, Morgan because they'll probably give the image another chance)
