betterment

I'm always working on this one goal to be a better me. Already I think for better or worse that I'm very me which is a good staring off point. Buckminster Fuller had a project to see how much good one person can do for the world. I think I am working to the same goal, especially if as many people as possible work on it from the same angle. Indeed!

(a) sounds very similar to my own struggle with kinaesthetic challengery - my hands get it, and my hips feel it, but my feet are pretty clueless. I had (and blogged) some great experiences studying folk dance at Kosmos, to which Loup has suggested I might try contra dancing. I also had great results with tai chi - even my very critical dancer girlfriend at the time said it made me a much less clumsy, more flowing person. I gather at least those of us with a natural sense of rhythm are way ahead of some folks.

(b) as an English teacher and former professional writer and editor, I'll tell you honestly that your writing's really quite good already. Your mechanics are solid (which is actually pretty rare even among a lot of my most literate friends), your organization is effective and feels natural, your word choices are effective and lively, and most importantly you have a strong personal voice. If you want to seriously make the craft and work of writing a higher priority in your life, there are resources I can recommend, but you already write well, so I'm down with Kaz: yeah, it'd be great if you wrote more, if you have time.

(c) Amen. I'm spending the summer trying to finish a lot of projects...when I look back in baffled wonder at how much I produced while fighting cancer with Kaihea, I suppose a lot of it came from the deadlines she imposed. These days the concept of "done" is draining out of art and music, which I think is generally good - you can always revise or remix or whatever anything but a live performance, but even if there is no "final product" there must be a PRODUCT at some stage. It's what the work wants to be, perfect or not.

Funny, for the past few years I've mentioned we should give Contra dancing a try and ding0 seems open to the idea of something with a set pattern and steps.
