you gotta love your fuck-ups

Got the first How To installment in the mail about Being a Good Student from The Susan Garrett this morning... and she starts with a re-packaging of that old kind of moth eaten vintage advice my mom gave me. You know: Be yourself.
Which is advice I never precisely passed on to my kids because I know from experience how confusing that can be. Who else could you possibly be but yourself, everything you are is actually something of who you are... even when you are playing a role in a theatrical performance, you are pulling out and revealing or exagerating in that role specific aspects or facets of you... I mean, this could be nervous you or confident you or funny you or trying really hard you or lazy you or bitchy you or compassionate you or rockstar you or very quiet enigmatic self-protective you or whatever - infinitely so-on and so-on etc etc

But what she goes on to say is to really learn something new you need to get out there and fuck-up. And you gotta embrace the fuck-ups. Love the fuck-ups. The fuck-ups are God and... only human.

ok. I can do that.

susan garrett, fuck-ups are god, good student
