Prompt 227 - A friend asks you to recommend a book: which book would you choose and why?

It would be entirely too predictable to list a book about martial arts, wouldn't it?

Very well. Instead, I'll go with another (equally predictable, to those who know me) book.

The Language of Flowers: A History by Beverly Seaton is one I recommend. It's about a topic everyone thinks they know, but usually get completely wrong: the Victorian habit of expressing their emotions towards one another through flowers. I enjoy it because it not only makes it clear that the entire world wasn't engaged in one solitary language of flowers, but because the author reminds us that for all its proposed "romantic" notions, the "language of flowers" took place during a time period in which it sucked to be a woman, period. And the author doesn't pull any punches in making that clear.

This is one I liked to read after a long day at Sherwood's Florist...it has different mermories attached to it now, because of that, and not all of them good, but that doesn't stop the book from being a good one.
