eminent domain

Jul 01, 2005 11:20

Taken from a Green article, "The decision expands the power of government to condemn private property ('eminent domain'), permitting officials to transfer property from one private owner to another." (i.e. in Ohio, a bunch of people's homes were destroyed to make room for a mall!)

Justice O'Connor says,

Any property may now be taken for the
benefit of another private property, but the fallout from this
decision will not be random. The beneficiaries are likely to be those
citizens with disproportionate influence and power in the political
process, including large corporations and development firms. As for
the victims, the government now has license to transfer property from
those with fewer resources to those with more. The Founders cannot
have intended this perverse result.

Nancy Pelosi said:
The Supreme Court has decided, knowing the particulars of this case, that that was appropriate, and so I would support that.

So much for fighting the man, Nancy. She says this out of her very careful reluctance not to denounce Roe v Wade's legitimacy I guess.
