After the incident reports suggested that Mr Abdullaev, 37, ate Mr Kurochkin after he had frozen to death in the minus 40 degree temperatures. Mr Abdullaev told police  in Neryungri, in Russia's Sakha Republic: 'He died by himself. He froze to death. Only after that did we start eating him.'  But this week in a rambling statement to the court, he admitted they ate their friend 'not because I was hungry. I had another reason,' according to reports.  However, he declined to say what it was.
