Ring-a-Ring-a-Rosies

The Captain wouldn't have said he was scared of Jemima. No, not scared. He was, after all, a seasoned officer who'd had more than a few brushes with death before his actual passing on. Good God, yes. One only had to think of that incident with the mess cook and the smoked haddock for proof of that!
He'd also spent a number of years in charge of a group of men, providing leadership as well as discipline. His men had known where they were with the Captain. Aside from Havers. And the Captain wasn't exactly sure of that situation himself. He and Havers hadn't exchanged any significant words, no promises, but the Captain had always thought - always hoped - that one day... Well, Havers - William - had gone off to have a crack at the Jerries and had never come back.
It was strange that a heart that no longer beat could still ache at the memory.
Had Havers passed on fully? Or was he trapped in some corner of a foreign land that was forever England? The Captain often wondered. Was Havers, even now, watching a pair of pearly gates and wondering when the Captain would come striding through them? The Captain knew the grief of waiting and watching, only to have one's hopes dashed. He'd never wanted to disappoint Havers and yet, here he was, stuck in Button House and going nowhere.
Ah, yes, Button House that was also home to Jemima.
It was odd, really, that the other plague victims didn't have such an effect on the upstairs ghosts as Jemima, but even Julian - who spent his days wandering around without his trousers - was unnerved by her. So, when the Captain said scared was not the word he'd use when saying how he felt about Jemima, what he really meant was that he was downright terrified of her.
