Today's movie is Hobson's Choice.
Hobson's Choice is a comedy romance set in Salford, Manchester, in the 1880s. Henry Hobson (Charles Laughton) owns a successful, fairly upmarket, boot shop and has 3 unmarried daughters: Maggie (Brenda De Banzie), Alice (Daphne Anderson), and Vicky (Prunella Scales). All 3 work in the shop, and Maggie basically runs the shop and the household.
When Mr. Hobson discovers they'd all like to marry, he agrees Alice and Vicky can (though he changes his mind when he finds he has to provide dowries). But Maggie, who's 30, is an old maid and far too old (and far too useful) to be marrying. Stung by his insults, Maggie says she'll arrange for her own husband.
The success of the shop is mainly due to Maggie's business skills and the exceptionally well-made boots their boothand, Willie Mossop (John Mills) makes. Willie's underpaid and under-valued by Mr. Hobson, and he's a timid man. He's completely horrified when Miss Maggie tells him she's going to marry him.
Enraged, Mr. Hobson strikes Willie with his belt, but Willie - far from backing down - stands his ground and tells Maggie he will marry her, after all.

Although the film's a comedy romance, it's also about Willie becoming his own man. With Maggie's love and support, he finds his backbone enough to stand up to Mr. Hobson and even to stand up to Maggie herself. And isn't she proud of him when he does! <3
