Day 348. What is your favorite Disney movie?
I like Beauty and the Beast a lot, but I think my favourite is Tangled.
Btw, one of the things I like about Beauty and the Beast (apart from Gaston's absolutely wonderful song) is that tall, handsome, heroic Gaston is the villain. Never judge a book by its cover.
But I was going to talk about Tangled.
Possible trigger warning for abusive parents.
Mother Gothel is a really good depiction of an emotionally abusive mother. She's determined to keep Rapunzel imprisoned in order to serve her own needs. She persuades Rapunzel that the outside world is dangerous, belittles her (then laughs it off as a joke), and turns from caring to raging in an instant. Whoever wrote that character must have had experience of a narcissistic parent who thought it was perfectly okay to destroy any chance of their child living an independent life.
Mother Gothel then outdoes the majority of narcissistic parents by kidnapping Rapunzel and attempting to murder Eugene. (But, as the news shows, there are other narcissistic parents who will go that far too.)
I love that Rapunzel gets to live happily ever after. I'm sure it took her a while to uninstall every button Mother Gothel programmed into her in order to control her, but I doubt Disney's going to put out a Tangled 2: Years in Therapy.
