Child Molestors Flout the Law and Shrug

The News and Observer of Raleigh, NC reports on the case of a convicted child molester now living next door to a large preschool in southeast Raleigh. Although he is in violation of NC law, law enforcement seems powerless to do anything about him. So basically, North Carolina has a law on the books saying that sex offenders can't live within 1,000 feet of places like day care centers, but some of them thumb their nose at the law with no consequences.

I understand that there are serious problems with such laws that and that it can be difficult for sex offenders to find a place to live. It is also a fact that such people will deliberately put themselves in situations where they are around children if they can get away with it. Everyone always seems surprised and shocked when people who have jobs with access to children are found to be abusing children. Somehow it doesn't register that people who want to victimize children deliberately get jobs where they have such access.

I also understand that common sense has to be applied in how laws are interpreted and enforced. But then, I find it hard to believe that this guy can't find anywhere to live that's not right next to a school. Especially in a town that has as much sprawl as Raleigh.

Considering that the News and Observer is one of the better local papers for doing investigative reporting, one has to wonder where else this is going on where the local paper just hasn't looked into the issue.
