Consider that in
a survey this week of over 1,200 registered voters,
Public Policy Polling found the following:
- 4% of respondents believe that shape-shifting Reptilians secretly run the world
- 5% of respondents believe that Paul McCartney actually died in 1966 (a well-known hoax)
- 7% of respondents believe the moon landing was faked
- 9% of respondents believe that the government adds fluoride to the water supply for sinister reasons (I would guess that number is a lot higher here in Portland, judging by the vehement opposition to fluoridation)
- 13% of respondents believe that President Obama is the anti-Christ, including 22% of those who voted for Mitt Romney in 2012
- 15% of respondents believe that secret mind control technology is used in television broadcasts
- 20% of respondents believe there is a link between childhood vaccines and autism
- 28% of respondents believe that Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 attacks, including 39% of Romney voters
- 37% of respondents believe that global warming is a hoax, including 58% of Republicans and 61% of Romney voters
It must be emphasized that all of these people can -- and most likely do -- vote.
