Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) just yielded the floor after holding it for over twelve hours on the issue of the president's power to order drone strikes on American soil.
In spite of whatever other disagreements I may have with him, I have to give him credit for taking a stand as he did. Standing up for what you believe in is one of the grand traditions of American politics. I thought the bi-partisan ovation given to Senator Paul when he yielded the floor, while technically in violation of Senate rules (which prohibit expressions of approval or disapproval), was a nice touch.
I think opposing extra-judicial killings of US citizens on US soil is something that we can all agree on. And my hope is that the high interest in Senator Paul's filibuster will bring the issue of civil liberties back into the national conversation.
