We wanted four more years and we got what we asked for. Today that four more years officially begins. Let's hope that in spite of all the challenges, the President is able to do something with it.
For my part, President Obama's election four years ago restored a little of my faith in America. I think those who say his re-election is even more significant are largely correct. By winning -- and winning against the odds in many ways -- he's proven that it wasn't a fluke, that it wasn't just the electorate being swept up in a novel fad. By winning again, the President has shown that, disappointments aside, there is something deeper in play here.
What is that something deeper? I think that will only be fully understood by the passage of time and the sober reflections of history, long after President Obama has left the White House. One thing I can say is that, so far, I like this new emboldened President Obama that we've come to see in recent weeks. Assuming that continues, I think this can be a good four years.
Could it be the four years where we finally break the power of the corporations and the banks and create an America that really works for everyone? That's a tall order. But maybe we can at least make a good start.
