I Give Up

As much as I love baseball, I'm getting incredibly frustrated with my team about now. Tonight the Indians lost their 11th in a row. That's right, count 'em, eleven. The longest losing streak in franchise history was 12 and that was back in 1931.

Yep, the Cleveland Indians, who were so bad for so many years, so bad that they were featured in Major League, went 80 years without losing 12 in a row. And tomorrow night, they're going to tie that mark unless they pull themselves together in a hurry.

They can't pitch. They can't hit. They can't play defense, which was dramatically demonstrated in last night's game when a throwing error led to eight unearned runs. In the second inning. Against the Minnesota Twins, who've given up over 100 runs more than they've scored this season.

Did I mention they can't pitch? Reading the pitching stats from the night's Indians game is becoming the most maddening part of my day. It's almost like our pitchers are going out and throwing batting practice every night. It's been a few weeks since an Indians pitcher has even had a quality start.

Some the awful outings that Indians starting pitchers have had lately:

  • Aug. 3 at Detroit Tigers, Justin Masterson, 4.0 innings pitched, 10 hits, 7 runs, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts, 10-2 Indians loss.
  • Aug. 4 at Detroit Tigers, Ubaldo Jimenez, 5.1 innings pitched, 7 hits, 6 runs, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts, 6-1 Indians loss
  • Aug. 6 vs Minnesota Twins, Zach McAllister, 1.2 innings pitched, 6 hits, 9 runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 14-3 Indians loss

. . . and on it goes.

Somehow this team is in third place, only because 1) until the past two weeks, they've actually played some decent baseball and 2) they're in a division with the sad-sack Kansas City Royals and the aforementioned Twins.

Although I have to point out that as bad as the Twins are, they've beaten the Indians for the last six games in a row by a combined score of 1,978 to 5.

I almost feel like I'm a Cubs fan. This is completely unacceptable. Grrr.
