Author: dragon_gypsy at past0rl_insanty
Recipient: lunargeography
Series: xxxHOLIC
Character/Pairing: Doumeki/Wataniki
Rating: meh, PG
Word Count: 928 (including the small introduction)
Author Notes/Warnings: this is my second draft of this story ;; I didn’t like where the first one was going lol It contains some stuff from recent chapters (both HOLIC and TRC, since part of it wasn’t exactly revealed in the HOLIC chapters). I would have loved to throw in angry Doumeki, but 1000 is too short D8 haha enjoy~ (ps sorry if there are any mistakes I didn’t get a chance to have someone beta it *A*)

“What’s the use of their having names,” the Gnat said, “if they won’t answer to them?”

“No use to them,” said Alice; “but it’s useful to the people that name them, I suppose. If not, why do things have names at all?”

Watanuki was sitting in the corner of his room, knees drawn up against his chest and bi-colored eyes glaring darkly at the last spot of sunlight coming in from the sliding window next to him. He figured he should go eat (if the disgruntled growling of his stomach was an indication), but any motivation had left his body.

It certainly wasn’t enough that he was finding gaps in his memory. That he could deal with: He was getting to an age where his mind had to be filled with more important things (like making Himawari-chan’s favorite dish for lunch, and making sure that Yuuko-san’s shop always was stocked with sake so he couldn’t be bothered to get her more, like…. School things, of course, though it was a little troublesome when he momentarily forgot his class number). But names were escaping his memory. Important names-names of classmates, names of his parents.

With a disgruntled sigh, Watanuki buried his face into the space between his knees. There was a steady knock at his door, but there was no desire to get up from his sulking spot. The boy couldn’t help but wince though when he easily identified the voice calling “Watanuki!” from the other side of the door.

In a matter of seconds, he had crossed the space to his door and pulled it open, looking up at the annoyed face of the archer. “What?”

Doumeki roughly shoved past, kicking off his shoes and shoving a bag into the seer’s arms. “You weren’t at the shop today.”

“I asked Yuuko-san for the day off. I haven’t been feeling well.” Watanuki pulled open the bag and peered inside. He frowned down at the ingredients. “What’s this?”

The taller figure stared blankly down at the top of his friend’s head. The boy really wasn’t looking well. “I’m hungry.”

The blue and amber eyes flashed in annoyance as Watanuki looked up from the bag. “And? Don’t tell me you came all the way out here to make me make dinner for you, you dumbass.”

“No one is at the temple. And Kunogi was worried about you after school today, so she asked me to come and check up on you.” Doumeki stepped further into the small apartment, briefly noting that (asides from the small collection of his school work in one spot on the floor) the room was as spotless as usual.

Giving a wistful sigh and wishing that Himawari-chan had come to visit him herself instead of sending the stupid ape, the boy shuffled into the kitchen and began to prepare dinner.

~+~

For once, the idiot of a human wasn’t complaining about wanting something else to eat-in fact, he wasn’t saying anything at all regarding the food. Watanuki was playing with a noodle, chasing it through the broth with his chopsticks as he tried to think if this was a good or bad thing.

Doumeki was done in a matter of seconds (the glutton) and set the bowl down on the floor in front of him. He took a moment to wash down the food with a sip from his tea before finally setting his attention on the boy across from him. “What’s bothering you?”

Watanuki didn’t bother to look up, opting instead to continue chasing the noodle. He debated if he wanted to answer Your face or It’s none of your business now get out if you’re done eating, but in the end settled for staying silent and appearing not interested in the discussion topic.

The archer decided to try again. “Watanuki.” He frowned when he got no response. “Watanuki.”

“Forgetting the names of my parents is what’s bothering me,” the boy snapped back, slamming down his chopsticks. “I’m bothered by the fact that asides from the few people I’m close to and a few of Yuuko-san’s customers, I can’t remember anyone’s name-or I’ll forget it only to have it come back to me hours later.” His eyes shot daggers at his companion’s feet, not wanting to look into his face. “I’m bothered by the fact that if it wasn’t for Kohane-chan… that I might even forget my own name.”

Amber eyes darkened in concern. “Then…” Doumeki started with the slightest sliver of hesitation. He already knew what the seer’s response would be, and his own reaction to that response. But he had to ask anyways. “Can I call you Kimihiro?”

Surprising them both, Watanuki hesitated-mouth open and brows creased in confusion. Finally, he snapped his mouth shut in a frown. “Don’t say it so casually, idiot. I was just complaining how much this is bothering me and you just have to go ask something like that like it was any other part of the conversation.”

That wasn’t quite the response he had been expecting, Doumeki realized as he found himself reaching out for the boy’s scrawny wrist. With a deft yank that sent Watanuki tumbling into his lap with a squawk, the archer leaned over to lower his lips to just above the flushed ear. “Then… Can I call you Kimihiro?” he repeated in an even voice. His hand that had snuck across his friend’s back could feel the shiver tracing down Watanuki’s spine.

The unlucky boy decided he was too unmotivated to do anything about this and merely grunted in return.
