I'm watching the rerun of Swap Meat with my mom, and she said something which pretty much summed up how I view Dean's relationship with Sam. She said, "I don't think he really sees his brother. Sam's just a duty, Dean's responsibility and something to protect. But he's not his own entity, not in any way Dean knows him." Basically, Sam's a possession, an object. Extreme, but that relationship is there.
Which, yeah. And I know this epi might serve as a way to enhance the feeling that the bros are distanced from each other. But, really, I don't buy that. Every time something like this happens to Sam, DEAN NEVER KNOWS. Like, hello, Dean, you get it yet? Sam knew in "Skin" because the damn shifter used Dean's banged up wrist ONE TIME.
...and in other news, I am writing the bejesus out of my big bang. OH YEAH. I'll probably hit 20k tonight
