Hi there - we haven't met (yet) but my thoughts are as follows: are you interested in the subject matters at the conventions. both escapade and bascon are slash cons with escapade edging towards the broader issues in slash fandom (who we are, where are we going). Both conventions post their panels so you can check out the topics.
beyond that cons are also social places to meet people you've met online, make new friends and chat about your favorite characters.
a more sci-if general convention in the bay area is Baycon - they focus on books and some media (TV.movies) and have a little bit of everything to offer (gaming, costuming etc). they too are social with small room parties based on interests. http://baycon.org/2008/index.html
Cons are interesting experiences and you might enjoy them, it is hard to say. BAScon, being a Slash con might be a bit odd for you as a straight male, unless you're truly interested in the guys on t.v. getting it on off screen. :D
