Her

You've lived your whole life in the shadow of someone you see through one lens. I recently learned some things about the woman you love, that made me love her more. I wish I could share these with you, but I don't see how it could be assimilated into your schema without some serious breakage. Your life is hard, but it is pure. This stuff wouldn't make it any easier, but ..?

We have an old family video of ourselves as toddlers, mud creatures from head to toe, so dirty we had to be hosed down in a wheelbarrow outside of the house, underneath the unruly pecan trees and the warm sun. Our days were Indian Blankets picked with fervor, slap fights over Nilla wafers, the prickle of blackberry thorns as we tried to evade daddy longlegs with our chubby fingers, and the juice-stained smiles upon victory. I wonder how often you think about this. It was such a short, sweet time in our twin lives, and so much has happened to us since then. These memories are my refuge.

I always clung to you like a sister, even though you have siblings of your own, and I've got one that floats around in the background.

We had babies together, they had a future.

But he is gone, and yours is growing so fast...

That life passed me by and I've made a beautiful new adventure. If you think the way I do, we probably both feel left behind by the other sometimes. I want you to know that I'll always be here, on my separate track, but tethered to you.
