i'm enjoying this series, now two episodes in. it centers around rookie not-yet-police-commissioner gordon (bruce wayne is a young kid, whose parents are murdered in the first episode. he cuts himself. alfred is seeking help for him). gordon has a fiance, a wealthy socialite with a dark secret, named barbara.

now i remember barbara gordon as being commissioner gordon's daughter. who bruce wayne trained in crimefighting, and who became the costumed heroine batgirl (and later oracle). now i really want it to turn out that in this continuity, barbara gordon is secretly a vigilante who trains young bruce wayne...

on re-watching, though, i'm pretty sure that barbara gordon's secret is that she used to be romantically involved with the female cop from the major crimes unit. not sure yet why she wants that kept secret. ah well.

it's pretty, but a grim depiction of a city where the entire establishment is corrupt. on the other hand it's also kind of a law-and-order fantasy: the most corrupt cop in the show is nevertheless worried about losing his job if the guy he shot while the man was trying to kill his partner with a knife turns out to be innocent of the crime they originally stopped him for. anyone in our world who watches the news at all might be, um, skeptical of that.

but it has a lot of nice touches (and anyone who ever read batman will giggle a lot at the many many familiar names that crop up). it also features selina kyle as a young street urchin with a steampunk aesthetic who robs from the rich and gives to the cats.
