Mum is my new musical obsession. OH NO. Emily wants me to be poor.
Last weekend was a blast from the not-so-much-past with two concerts and lots of seeing the Carlsbad sights in between. Michelle, Phil, and I left San Luis Obispo Friday afternoon to drive down to LA, grab some apple pancakes at Dinah's, and catch Death Cab for Cutie with Pretty Girls Make Graves at the Wiltern LG. Well, everything was going according to plan, until I got two hours down (almost to Ventura) and realized I had left the tickets in my room in San Luis Obispo. Yeah... it was not a happy moment in the truck. I did the only thing I could: whipped my truck around and headed right back up. Fortunately, I have an AWESOME roommate who grabbed the tickets and met us 25 minutes south of San Luis in Santa Maria. It saved us almost an hour, and we got to pick up some food from In n' Out before heading back down. Long story short: we missed all of the opening bands and got to the Wiltern after Death Cab had played two songs and were just finishing Why You'd Want to Live Here. The very next song they played was Title and Registration and the only way I can describe it is to say that the entire 3 and a half hour detour was worth it for that one song alone. Watching Ben Gibbard sway back and forth before the microphone while singing, strumming his guitar's open strings, and playing two bongo drums with a drumstick was A M A Z I N G. When they played Transatlanticism during the encore.. it was so overwhelmingly beautiful that I had trouble breathing. Pictures from that night are linked below.
After the show, I finished the drive to Carlsbad with two snoozing passengers and Phil and I crashed. Saturday we went out to lunch at Chin's with my dad and Lucia (Szechwan is the decliciousness) and then drove down to Carmel to pick up Josh. We took a much needed pit stop at Lou's Records (I have to feed the addiction) and I picked up the new Pinback CD and the other Mellowdrone CD. We all know that I have impeccable taste in music, so I won't bother with describing how much these CDs rock my heart. Emily and one of her friends met us there and we cruised back to my house to hang out in the middle of a black out. That night, Phil, Josh, and I drove down to SOMA to meet up with Ryan, Tyler, and the twins to see Coheed and Cambria and Underoath. Talk about an incredible show... I wore the ugly hat and it was a massive success. 3 opened the show and they are one of the most ridiculous bands I've ever seen live and I would probably buy their CD if the singer's voice didn't make my brain itch. Underoath tore the stage apart and there is nothing else I can say about that. I think Coheed alternates putting on good shows. The first and third times I saw them, they put on AMAZING performances, and the second and fourth (which would be this one) times they put on decent shows. It was still the highlight of my night. Oh yeah, whats with Ryan dating a girl that barely clears five feet?
Sunday was Costco and visiting my mom and me getting annoyed with people who are late. This week has given me a lot to think about in terms of what I've been dedicating my energy into on a daily basis. Tuesday night I saw The Incredibles and it was pretty stinking funny. I most definitely approve. I should be down in Carlsbad not this Tuesday but the next one for Thanksgiving. It'll be nice to spend a bigger chunk of time there.
