I had an incredible Saturday. Here's the summary:
1. Went out to breakfast with my friend Jessica Buck to discuss marketing and promotional ideas for Eraserhead Press. Had a wonderful time, came away with some great ideas.
2. Met up with Froggie and went to the
Free Geek "Geek Fair". If you don't know it, Free Geek is a wonderful non-profit organization in Portland that recycles computers and technology and provides them to people in exchange for community service. They have a kick ass facility with art gallery and game room etc. This year's Geek Fair included some pretty good indie rock bands, the "smashtacular" which was incredible to watch (people smashing old computers, printers, etc with a sledgehammer), jugglers, a dunk the nerd dunktank, hard drive shuffleboard and more. (ATTN: Terrasa and Britton if you are reading this click the link to check out Free Geek, you guys would love this place).
3. After that, Froggie and I went to a little cafe up by Mt Tabor and I had an iced coffee and a cupcake. A chocolate cupcake with a pile of blue frosting! It was so cute and tasty, I can't remember the last time I had a cupcake :-) Then we went for a walk around the reservoir.
4. Then it was over to Ft. Vancouver for an old-timey baseball game. I am not a sports fan, but this was so much fun. The park volunteers reenacted an 1867 baseball game with the original rules.
Here's a site I found explaining the rules. The main differences are that the pitcher throws underhand and must pitch to the batter's preference and the ball is considered caught if caught on the first bounce. They had beautiful period costumes. I cheered for the Occidentals and my team won the game vs the Shermans (who were dressed as union soldiers).
5. After the game we went to Amnesia for a beer. As we arrived there was a group of Cubans who had pulled their car up onto the sidewalk next to the beer garden and were blasting salsa music. As I walked past sort of swaying my hips to the music a random guy approached me and we danced. I don't dance salsa, but I know how to follow a lead, so I followed along and got into it. He was a great dancer and it was awesome. He asked me where I learned to dance like that and I told him I tango, he told me that I was the best American girl he had danced with. Which, I figure, is probably the thing he says to every American girl, but I didn't let that stop me from taking it as a compliment. It was fun!
So that was my day and it was perfect weather, about 75 degrees, alternating between a nice gray overcast with some sporadic sprinkles and a sun dappled sky.
