four truths about white boy soul (or black roots, white fruits part nine)

1. Justin Timberlake needs a new solo album this year that's amazing to prove he's not just a fluke. And there's no need to make an ass of himself by adding Memphis horns or trying to emulate southern soul from the seventies. Cat Power is doing that just fine on her new "album".

2. Speaking of white boy soul, everyone who was all frothy over Jamie Lidell's record needs to revisit Remy Shand's "The Way I Feel"..which puts Lidell to shame in the white boy soul department. Motown had a gem with this guy. It's a damn shame they didn't know how to market him.

3. I've been in engaged in a discussion with a few fellow music wonks where we've been trying to envision any white artist that could rock the Apollo. A partial list, depending on context/era:
Michael McDonald
Dan Hartman
Robert Palmer (esp. the Gap Band or Cherrelle covers)
Van Morrison
Tom Jones
Timberlake
Hall & Oates (they've actually done it)
Burton Cummings (only if it's "These Eyes")

4. Someone (perhaps Timberlake) needs to re-record "Tender Love" by Force MDs.
