Radon

when we bought our house, almost 20 years ago, my dad, being a good home inspector, tested it for Radon-a cancer causing element that houses that have a love of underground space are vulnerable to. The test came back as a 4, meaning that is was borderline dangerous. My dad had them come in and fix it. He tested it a few more times and it came up as a 2-Fixed. He tested it a few more times and it stayed fixed. Normally he wouldn’t have to worry about it again. But, out of the blue, he decided to test it again recently.

In all his time as a home inspector he’s never seen a score higher than a 12. Our house came back as a 24.

Whoa shit.

How or when it got so bad stumps my dad. The best theory anyone can come up with is that a few summers ago, when they re-did the driveway and bomb shelter (cuz the foundations was cracked) they stirred something up… but still, to cause it to jump to a 24?

Anyhow, in the mean time I’m living out of the trunk of my car and crashing at people’s houses. April and Toño found an apartment in Robyn and Dani’s apartment complex and moved out. Our upstairs isn’t as bad, so my parents are staying there. My dad is hoping to get it fixed by the end of the week and figure out what the hell happened.

We’re all kinda scared now-especially for the baby. Sofia has been living there for a year and no one knows how or when it got so bad. We’ve all been exposed to it. It will take years for anything to manifest itself… but still. :-(

The only upshot is that April and Toño moved out, meaning that, when the Radon is cleared, I get the basement apartment. So, provided that my house is safe again, there will be a new year’s party at my house!! Y’all are invited.

::sigh::
