1st day of school 2012/13 Westhoff Lions

Aug 15, 2012 08:15

Jack and Delaney are off to their first day of school for the 2012/13 school year.

The alarm went off at 7:30 AM this morning, and Karen was already up. I think she had some sort of alarm clock malfunction this morning. We turned on the lights in the kids rooms, and once Delaney realized i was trying to wake her up, she bounded right out of bed and was eager to get going for the first day of school. Jack was right back to his usual routine, and wanted to rol back over to go back to sleep. He'd stay in bed until 9 or 10 o'clock if we'd let him (takes after his mom and dad).

In less than 15 minutes we had everyone ready with clothes on, teeth brushed, hair combed, shoes tied, and backpacks (with lunch boxes inside) ready to go. So, with 10 minutes to go before the bus arrives, we all headed outside to enjoy the cool sunny morning. I took several photos of the kids (already uploaded to Facebook), and they walked next door to the bus stop to talk with Oscar and Alex Posadas.

Jacki Nunn Rosado and the bus (#34) were right on time at 7:55 AM. The kids filed up the steps in their usual fashion, and it was almost as if we picked right back up where last year left off.
Last night was teacher meet and greet at Westhoff Elementary school, from 5 to 6 PM.

We met Delaney's teacher, Mrs Fiorini, in Rm #22 for the her first grade, and then Jack's teacher, Mrs Rohn, in Rm # 26 for the his third grade class. Both seemed very nice and we are excited about this school year for both of our children.

Mrs. Fiorini has been the reading resource teacher at Westhoff Elementary for several years now, and specializes in getting kids to accelerate and improve their reading skills. Dini has a lot of the basics down pat, but is reluctant to really dive into reading. jack was much the same way his first grade year, and Mrs Fiorini was the one to help him kick start a love for reading that still continues today for him. He started off the first quarter of his 1st grade year scoring at about a 35% mastery of site words and reading comprehension for his grade level. By the time he finished the first grade, he was so enthusiastic about reading that he was reading well above the 2nd grade level, and has remained at an accelerated reading level ever since. (Now we just need a Mrs. Fiorini to kick start his desire to learn math and social studies).

While roaming the school, we saw Mrs Roettger greeting her new students. Dini went in to give her a hug, and Mrs Roettger said Dini would have to make sure to stop by and see her as often as she could. I think Dini is going to be one of those students that every teacher just falls in love with and is always following up on. Dini's not really a "teacher's pet" kind of kid, she's just very personable and helpful, and likes to assist with cleaning up, keeping order, and going the extra step while at school to get things done. And, being one of the smaller girls, she stands out a bit as the little cute girl. LOL

So, here's to the 2012/2013 school year. We're off to a roaring good start, and hope to keep it that way.

Now, it's time for me to take a quick and brief cat-nap, and then spend some quality time with my sweet Bubbie Bee for the remainder of the day.
