Karen's getting a makeover (tumblr x-post)
Ever since Karen told me on Monday that she wants to get her haircut and have bangs and layers put into her hair, I've been on the hunt for a photo of a style that I thought she might like and would want to take with her to show our hairstylist.
She initialy shot down all of the photos that I found and liked: but I know that's just because I was primarily picking photos of long, straight, one length, hair with bangs...
None of them really had much noticeable layering to them, and that's specifically what she was looking for. Can't blame a guy for trying to influence things the way that i like them, can you?
She eventually showed me a photo of Reba McEntire's recent grown out and layered hairstyle, and said she wanted her hair cut like hers. That specific cut looks ok on Reba, but I wasn't so sure how it would look on Karen. Something about the bangs seemed too heavy and out of place for my Sweetie's face structure, so I kept looking.... and finally came across a photo she likes.
Karen wants bangs and layers in her long hair, like the model's hair in the below photo.

We've made plans to meet up at the salon right after work tomorrow evening, and I've already called to make sure that Erin will be available to cut Karen's hair for her. I'm confident that Erin will do an excellent job of cutting and styling Karen's hair, but this in one of those time when I wish Jamie were still working at our salon. She had gorgeous long hair, and had an eye for great hairstyles and cutting techniques.
Still,... I have mixed emotions about tomorrow night. I'm just not entirely sold on the whole scope of this makeover. More specifically, I’m not very sure about the layering part of the haircut, and for two reasons:
1) One of the things that I absolutely love most about Karen’s hair, is the fact that it is all one length. It is a very sexy look on her. AND... It always looks so smooth, shiny, and healthy; even when she just lets it air dry straight out of the shower.
2) I'm worried that Karen will end up being disappointed in the end results. Layered hair is not a wash-n-wear hairstyle, and she's going to have to make extra time and an extra effort to style it daily, or it won't have the end result she is hoping for.
On a definite positive, I'm very much looking forward to seeing her with bangs again! The bangs are definitely going to look very sexy. Karen's eyes are so beautiful, and when she has brow length bangs to frame her cute face, it looks really hot.
I just have a bad feeling that Karen is going to be disappointed in the end results of the layers after they are cut into her hair. Layers look great when you have lots of body or natural wave and curl to your hair, but Karen's hair is fine and straight. (ie.:Perfect hair for an all one length cut.)
A layered haircut is not wash and wear hairstyle, and I know how Karen likes to shower and just leave the house with wet hair. i just don't see her getting up an extra 15 or 20 minutes every morning to style her hair.
If not cut correctly, and without taking the extra time and effort to style it correctly every day, layered hair looks frizzy, unkempt, and lifeless on most people.
At least with the current all one length style, that I have spent the past two years painstakingly trimming the layers out of as she has grown it out to the current length, she can get away with leaving the house with wet hair because the weight, length, and evenness of her hair keeps it looking good as it dries naturally.
My worst fear is that she will be so disappointed in the end result that she starts thinking about cutting her long hair off, rather than taking the next year or two to grow the layers back out. I've waited over 4 1/2 years to finally see her grow her hair out this long; and it finally looks so beautiful and sexy at its current length.
I know... that sounds like blasphemy coming from the mouth of a hair fetishist whose ultimate desire is to see a woman's hair cropped, buzzed, or shaved completely bald. But Karen looks so incredibly gorgeous with really long hair; and with her hair this long, I can forget about my hair fetish... I don't feel the overwhelming desire and need to constantly harass her to keep cutting it shorter and shorter every time she goes for a trim or haircut.
I'm not ready to go back to that situation again. Getting away from that is what sparked my desire to see her with long hair in the first place. I was pleasantly surprised to realize how much I truly loved seeing long hair on her, and how sexy it looks on her. I don't want to risk losing that.
Maybe, as usual, I'm over analyzing this whole thing... and thinking it out to be something it isn't. The layers may look great in Karen's hair, and maybe I'm wrong and this will actually spark interest in her to take the extra time in the morning to do her hair every day like this style will require. I just can't see her getting up an extra 15 to 20 minutes every day to dry and curl her hair to achieve the look this cut will demand. Like I mentioned before, layered haircuts are not wash and wear.
At any rate, I don't want to be accused of being controlling, and start another fiasco like the one that almost tore our marriage apart 4 years ago when she cut the bobbed haircut off. It's been 4 long years, and I feel like we still haven't recovered from the damage that situation caused.
The bottom line is that it's her hair. And even though I have certain preferences, and desires, to see it cut or styled a specific way, because of my obsession and fetish for all things hair... she is the one that has to style it, wear it, and be happy with how she feels and looks each and every day. My biggest concern hee is that she is making a well informed deciosion to cut her hair, and is happy with the end results.
So... I'm keeping my mouth shut and letting her just do what she wants to do. I'll support whatever decision she makes. And I'll love her and be happy for her as long as she is happy. She's still my Sweet bubbie Bee, gorgeous and beautiful in every way, no matter what the hairstyle results may be.
