On the 19th of this month, it will have been six full months since I cut my long hair off, and surrendered my ponytail to the scissors. And even after six long months, I still believe that cutting it was a huge mistake.
I've regretted sitting down in that salon chair, and allowing Denise to cut my hair off, from the moment of the first snip. A feeling i feel just as strongly about still today.
Partially because I gave in to cutting it for the wrong reasons, even though the intent and who I ultimately cut it for was the right thing to do.... But I mainly regret it because it was done in the wrong way, and by the wrong person. The "HOW" and by "WHO" should have been a drastically different set of circumstances, and that fact is going to stick like a burr in my shorts for a very long time to come. As long as it takes for me to grow my hair back to that length again. (which equates to about 46 months time).
Over these past 6 months, I've only gotten two haircuts at the salon; neither of which was anything more than just a trim around the ears and neck line (although taking off more than an inch right at Christmas time)... and the top of my hair has gone completely untouched. My bangs are now about 4 inches long, and the hair on top of my head that was left longer for the side part is now as long as 5 inches.
It has only been within the past 3 or 4 weeks that I have been able to just let my hair air dry without having to put product into it before going out. And I finally feel like I actually have hair and a real hairstyle again. I love it. If I weren't growing it out, I think I would just shorten it up in the back and keep my hair like this.
I want to grow my long hair back. I'm going to grow my long hair back; thicker, darker, fuller, and even longer than it was before the big snip. And with the proper care and nutrition (and even the help of some hair growth stimulating chemicals, if need be), I know that I can and will do it.
Just....
NOT RIGHT NOW.
Growing my hair back out to ponytail length is just going to have to wait. In fact, growing it out to the goal that I had actually set for myself at the beginning of this year (see photo ) is probably only about another 2 or 3 months away; but I realize how much my Bubbie Bee would like to have it cut short again, and every indication that I've been getting from her is that she would like it even shorter than I cut it last September. MUCH Shorter.
The following is only one of many examples, showing the type of hints that Karen has slipped into various conversations over the past three to four months; subtly and sometimes not so subtly letting me know just how short she would really like to see me have my hair cut. And I know she is serious, and really wants this, because she has been very consistent in the specific style that she seems to desire most. A high-n-tight.

I'm gonna have some Chinese food for lunch.
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:21 PM]:

Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [12:24 PM]:

Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:24 PM]:
you got crabs
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [12:24 PM]:
just waiting for Joy to bring it back.
no, i don't have crabs. like seriously... where would they live. Crabs can't live in a desert
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:25 PM]:
in all that long hair on top of your head
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [12:26 PM]:
hmmm.
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:43 PM]:
eating your cat and dog?
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [12:43 PM]:
yep
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:43 PM]:
ewwwwwwwwwww
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:58 PM]:
have you grown a tail yet?
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [12:58 PM]:
nope. tails haven't been popular since the early to mid 80's. they went out with the other punk hairstyles.
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:58 PM]:
oh
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [12:58 PM]:
lol
why would i grow a tail?
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:59 PM]:
cause you ate cat and dog
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [12:59 PM]:
nah. I just ate chicken
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [12:59 PM]:
sure you did
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [1:10 PM]:
Speaking of hairstyles... You know, its going to be getting hot in a few months.
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [1:10 PM]:
yep
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [1:11 PM]:
My hair isn't long enough to put up in a pny tail. Whatever will I do?
Sounds like I have a dilema on my hands... or head (so to speak)
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [1:12 PM]:
huh?
what a quandry
Mullen, Dwight A [GCG-NAOT] [1:12 PM]:
yep.
Mullen, Karen [GCG-NAOT] [1:13 PM]:
I think maybe you should take care of that. go get a high and tight or something like that
(H)
So.... I've decided that sometime within the next couple of days, or couple of weeks, I will get my hair all buzzed off into a really short high-n-tight haircut fro my Bubbie Bee.
We have a couple of days off together comeing up at the end of this week. maybe if I drop enough hints of my own, I can get her to give me a haircut, and use the clippers to take it off to a nice short crew cut; and then, if she really wants the whole high-n-tight look we can go to the salon and have whatever is still left on my head shaped up a bit. I'll have Christina or Erin take the sides all the way down to a "00000" skin tight stubble blade length if that's what's necessary to make my Sweetie happy.
But I do know that I would like to have karen do the initial cutting of my hair, and for her to use the scissors to play around a bit, before giving me the intiail BUZZ cut. If I can get her to whisper the words Crewcut (or "Bawld", as she sometimes pronounces it) into my ear, I think I might even just lost my sanity and beg for a full head shave by the time she is done teasing me.
Like I've said, I'm not all that enthusiastic about cutting off my hair again; especially after having grown it out this far over the past 6 months. But knowing that this is something that Karen Wants, and seems to genuinely Desire, it makes me really want to do it for her. And as long as she is involved in it, I know I'll enjoy it. (unlike the last dramatic hair cut I received)
Depending upon how well my offering up of my hair to the clippers is received; and whether or not it seems to have any significant positive impact or appreciation from the person it is intended to impress; I'll follow up the initial high -n-tight with regular trims (and possible full head shaving) throughout the Spring and the majority of the summer. After this summer, I'll re-evaluate whether giving up 6 months of re-growth towards my personal preference and goal was worth the trade off; and if it has been, then I just very well may keep the buzz cuts and short hair for the foreseeable future.
If it receives as little appreciation and reception as I have received over the past six months, after cutting off over 20 inches of hair; basically leaving me completely dissapointed in myself and the whole situation, regretting that i ever allowed myself to entertain the thought of cutting my hair off for certain individuals.... then I will start growing it back out, and I'll not get another haircut until my hair is at least as long as it was on September 18th, 2011.
And THAT is what I've decided I'm going to do about growing out my hair. And I'm not going to change my mind about it.
