"I never know how to act around you," Neville said once they made their way to the bar, and each of them got a glass of red wine.

"I'm not sure if that's a compliment or an insult."

"I'm not sure, either," said Neville. "I've already said your entire lot is good-looking. I'm just more of a one-person intentional dating sort of guy. I don't play around, and... before you get all feisty with me about it. I'm not saying you do, but you have a reputation which is none of my business. However, there is a certain expectation that's kept when you are a herbologist and planning to become a professor at Hogwarts soon. Kids read the Prophet, and they do have a gossip column that's less than kind to celebrities."

"I'm not a celebrity."

"No. But Ron and Hermione are. Harry is."

Their conversation was interrupted by a shriek. Someone yelled, "Elara Ravenshade just proposed to her girlfriend. They're engaged!"

Neville exhaled quietly, relieved Percy wasn't here to see the engagement. Percy couldn't stand Elara-it was evident in the way his eyes always narrowed when she spoke. If he'd been present, watching the attention shift to Elara and her fiancé, his jaw would've tightened. That familiar smirk would've appeared, signalling trouble.

A snide remark would've followed, sharp enough to silence the room and set Elara bristling, her cheeks flaming as she glared back. Neville could almost hear the awkward coughs, see the glances exchanged, and feel the festive mood vanish entirely.

Then, of course, there'd be the aftermath: muttered gossip over tea, pointed conversations, and yet more work drama come January. No, it was a blessing Percy wasn't here. Let him enjoy his evening with Oliver while Elara basked in her moment.

"You're thinking about Percy, aren't you?" Charlie asked, laughing.

"Oh, so this drama is well known then?" asked Neville.

They sipped their wine in silence, and Neville thought that something had just shifted between them.
