Merlin took a step back from Arthur, feeling shocked, and betrayed.
He had been dreading the day he'd ever have to tell Arthur about how he possessed magic, and now, Arthur was asking him to use magic to hide shield them so they could engage in sex?
Shocked, because Arthur already knew, and betrayed because he didn't seem to want to tell Merlin about it unless it was for his own gain.
Merlin had stayed up many evenings worrying over what he would do, how he could ever tell Arthur, and what would happen next. He had wanted to, and for the most part, managed to keep his feelings hidden and now, this was nothing but flood gates being opened and he wasn't so sure how he could keep it all controlled.
"I think…"
"Merlin…" Arthur pulled Merlin closer and wrapped his arms around Merlin's waist. "Don't…"
"I have to go."
"But…"
"I…This isn't right, Arthur. You're the prince."
"What?" Arthur sounded startled as if Merlin had just slapped him. "I'm not good enough for you anymore?"
"Arthur…" Merlin pressed his palms against Arthur's chest, trying to push him away, but Arthur didn't move. "I can't win today, can I?" he said, mostly to himself when he felt Arthur stiffen against him.
"I don't want to do something you don't wish to do as well," Arthur said and he finally took a step back.
But this wasn't the way Merlin wanted things to go.
"I'm just…" Merlin sighed, running his fingers through his hair. "I need some time to think. I wanted to tell you, show you, gauge your reaction to the truth. I don't want me to use…" He paused briefly, "…magic…" he whispered, for something that isn't meaningful-"
"This, what we do, is meaningless to you?" Arthur sounded hurt and he took yet another step back.
"No. Stop walking away from me," Merlin commanded. "It's not what I said."
"Then, what?"
"Please accompany me to my quarters, sire," Merlin said.
"What about Gaius?"
Merlin didn't answer him. He stood up straight and then kissed Arthur on the cheek. "I'm not doing this here with you right now, Arthur. I have my secrets, and you have yours, but this isn't how I want to reveal my magic to you."
Trying to look confident, but feeling as though his entire world was going to fall apart, Merlin stepped away from Arthur. He turned and started to make his way back to his rooms.
Arthur didn't follow him, and that was okay, he thought. He'll have his moment with Arthur, and it wouldn't be rushed.
