"I should go."

Merlin's barely touched his ale and he knew he needed to leave. He couldn't simply be sat there with his friends, laughing and talking, while Arthur was either looking solemn or just glaring at him.

"Where?" Gwaine asked.

"Gaius is expecting me. He has a list of tasks I need to do for tomorrow, and he wants to make sure I know what to do. And I have other duties…" Merlin was trying to be vague but he knew some of the knights saw right through that. Maybe he wasn't close with all of them, but Gwaine and Percival were by his side the most, and they would know something was wrong.

"You're fast at all your chores, Merlin, so don't act like it's that," Percival said, slapping him in the back.

"It's you," Gwaine said looking at Percival, then he chanced a glance at Merlin, "Isn't it. He smells."

Everyone around the table exploded in a roar of laughter and Merlin chuckled along with them.

"Come on, Merlin," Gwaine said, filling Merlin's mug. "It's not like you're going to deliver the wrong potion to the wrong person."

At that, Merlin started to cough. There was no way Gwaine spoke on purpose because he wouldn't know. Would he?

"Thanks but you know, you all have a mission in the morning too." Merlin stood up quickly and took a step away from the table before Percival's hands could grab him. "I'll see you."

He rushed out of the tavern and started to make his way to his room. Hopefully, Gaius would be asleep and he would have less questions to answer. Not that Gaius would be bothering him too much-but he had been wondering about what was and wasn't developing between Merlin and Arthur and Merlin didn't have an answer.

More secrets. He had more and more secrets to keep every day.

"Merlin."

Arthur's voice startled him and Merlin jumped.

"It's alright. It's just me."

"Right. Sire. How-how are you?"

It was dark, and Arthur was all but hidden in the shadows, as if refusing to come out. So Merlin took a step towards him. "Is everything okay?"

When Merlin could feel himself hidden in the darkness with Arthur, Arthur finally spoke. "I don't know."

The words uttered were so quiet, Merlin wasn't entirely certain he'd heard correctly.

"Arth-" Arthur grabbed Merlin, shoved him against the nearest wall, and Merlin's back hurt from the impact of it. "Ow-" he was about to say when Arthur's lips were on him. Oh, his brain supplied.

Merlin stopped thinking when Arthur's body was pressed against his, when his tongue slid into Merlin's mouth, and when Arthur's knee found a new home in-between his legs. He moulded against Arthur, his hands searching-to lift Arthur's shirt up, for skin, to feel. To feel something. To feel more.

They stood there a while, kissing in the shadows, Merlin releasing small moans every time Arthur's thumb pressed into his hips.

More secrets.
