"Draco Malfoy admitting he's an arsehole. Can I get that in writing? Summon me a quill and I'll take it home before it the ink dries," Neville teased.

Draco pushed him lightly.

"I don't want you to leave angry." I don't want you to leave at all, thought Draco.

"It's fine. You're right. We had an arrangement and I-"

"Just because I'm having dinner with my parents and there will be talk of prospects doesn't mean I'm going to marry the first person-"

"I know this. I'm not an idiot."

"I would never consider you an idiot, Longbottom. Can you let me finish a fucking thought?"

Neville scowled at Draco but Draco wasn't going to back down. He needed to get this off his chest. This was only their second day together as whatever the three of them were and this dinner was supposed to be light- of course he should have known nothing ever went as planned. Not in his lifetime.

Draco woke up the next day feeling defeated. He went through the motions of his day until it was time to go to his parents. When he arrived at the manor, nothing seemed to have changed.

He had a drink with his father in the den, and then they all gathered around the lavish dining room table where his father only had scotch and a cigar, while his mother made excuses about eating light to maintain her figure. He didn't think his father noticed or cared.

It was dreadful. Usually, he looked forward to meeting up with Longbottom after these evenings for a bit of fun, but right now, everything was up in the air.

"Is everything all right, dear?" His mother had made her observation was something was off and looked determined to get it out of him.

"Perfectly fine, Mother," he said as convincingly as he could. All he wanted to do was leave here and go and find Neville and maybe even Harry and reconcile. But he knew he couldn't go there now. Not tonight.

They all needed some time to breathe and take it all in.

"You know, I'm thinking of going to Paris next weekend. Why don't you come with me?"

At that, Lucius Malfoy snorted. He always had a thing or two to say about Mother and Draco's weekends in France. Mostly because he wasn't allowed to leave, and if he was, his spendings were monitored.

Now he knew why. Now, he knew more details than he'd cared for.

"Ignore your father, dear," she continued. "What do you think?"

"I'll have to get back to you," Draco said, trying to think of an excuse. "I've got a few meetings planned for my cook-"

"You're still not pursuing that, are you?" Father asked with derision.

"You mean having a life?" Draco spat but the look from his mother warned him against continuing.

He finished the dinner with as much cordiality as he could muster- was out of the manor, without looking back.
