Summary: Arthur is a bit obsessed with Merlin.
They say that when you mess with a dragon, you get burned. Simply because you are literally playing with fire. Arthur was told that, consistently. But of course there were no real dragons around, you know, it wasn't like it was the age of the dragons. He lived in the modern world and the only dragons he was aware of were the ones tattooed on Merlin's arms.
Yet, him messing with Merlin was considered messing with a dragon.
Merlin wasn't a dragon. He was a bloke. A normal bloke that did normal types of things, like go to work, drink coffee, and visit the cinema. Every Friday. Merlin went to the cinema every Friday and sat in the same seat. He ordered a medium cafe mocha with whole milk and whipped cream from Coffee Aroma every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
He worked at Pendragon publishing and took route 333 at half past eight in the morning and went to the pub after work on Tuesdays and Saturdays with Freya, and Gwen.
On Wednesdays he went to Albion bookshop that held poetry readings. Yeats was Merlin's favourite.
Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with the golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams beneath your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
Merlin had his favourite poem pinned on the wall of his cubicle and would stare at it for long periods of time when he thought no one was looking.
So why was Merlin a dragon? Like a dragon, he was full of vitality and strength. He had power. Power, like Arthur had never seen before.
How did Arthur mess with him?
He messed with him because he challenged him. Challenged him every day he'd gone in to work. Challenged his designs, and had him fight; strive to prove himself to be better.
"But why?" Leon asked him.
Because...that was the only way Arthur knew how to deal with Merlin. The only way he knew how to love him. Because, Arthur wanted to play with fire, and he wanted to get burned.
