With my Christmas money I purchased one of Aileen Ribeiro's fashion books. She is one of my favorite authors on fashion history because she gets beyond the basics. She really digs in and tells you about the culture around the clothes, how they were made, purchased and what it was like to wear them. The book I bought is called The Art of Dress: Fashion in England and France 1750 to 1820. This is one of my favorite eras of fashion.
Unfortunately most of Ribeiro's books are out of print and the used copies are very expensive. So my exposure to her books up until now has been entirely through the library. So I was very pleased to find this book at a really good price. The book normally sells for $100 to $200 -- sometimes it goes above $400 (
the cheapest copy on Alibris right now is for $135; the same is true at
Abebooks).
I found it for about $50 with shipping, so I'm very happy.
These are my books about fashion history. I have other books that cover other areas of history as well as fashion, but these are just the pure fashion ones. My new book The Art of Dress is in the center. Also pictured are several books by Phillis Cunnington, one of my other favorite fashion-history authors.
