I haven't seen Chamber of Secrets yet. I will sometime this week.
1. Do you believe in magic? Why or why not? If you could have any magical ability, what would it be? Why?
I don't believe in magic as defined in the world of fantasy - period. But I do believe in a different type of magic.
If I had a power: I would like to be able to speed read really fast. I can hardly speed read as it is.
2. Have you read the Harry Potter series? How did you come to read one or all of the books? Which of the four books did you like best? Why?
I had to read the first one for school. I was taking children's lit. and yes this was at a Christian school. I don't think I would have read it other wise - I hate hype and I don't like to read/watch things just because they are 'popular' (I still haven't seen the movie 'Titanic'). So I generally speaking had no interest to read it. But I am so glad I did.
My favorite book is probably the second book. I'm not sure why I liked it but it seems to me to be the tightest constructed of the 4. But I love them all.
3. What do you like best about Harry Potter? Why? If you don't like Harry Potter, please tell us your reasons why.
I think it's a wonderful combination of several things. The concept is just charming. But she embellishes it will such creative humor, then her characters are drawn very vividly. Suspense, mystery and a refreshing warmth. There has been too much cynicism in literature of late.
4. Did you see (or will you see) any of the movies based on Harry Potter? Why or why not? What did you like/dislike about the films?
I thought they did a great job capturing the essence. The casting, the setting all are marvelous. What is missing is all the side humor, there just isn't time to add in all the little antidotes that are in the novel. In some ways I almost think they'd do better as a mini-series then as a straight film.
5. A recent MSNBC article mentioned that some children were disappointed with the Harry Potter films because what they pictured in their imaginations was different than what they saw on the big screen. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
A film is never going to be as good as the book in the same way the book is good. When I watch a media adaptation of a book what I look for is the essence, the feel, the themes. If the basics are all there I don't mind a couple changes. After all I still have my own vision of the story in my head to content myself with.
As a side note SNL did a parody of 'Welcome Back Cotter,' called 'Welcome Back Potter' - very cute.
