I got Mandy Patinkin's "Mamaloshen" from the library - OH MY! I had no idea how appreciate Forbidden Broadway's parody of it is. He takes "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and translates it into Yiddish (it becomes: "Iber Kali Fregelistish-Oyspiale-Dikhtik"). For those of you unfamiliar with Forbidden Broadway's parody, here's a taste of it:
"Super-Frantic-Hyper-Active-Self-Indulgent-Mandy
When I get hysterical the critics think I'm dandy,
When they cast a lunatic I always come in handy
Super-Frantic-Hyper-Active-Self-Indulgent-Mandy"
I got the album because I wanted to hear my name correctly pronounced. My name is in several songs in various forms. My favorite is in track 9 "Paper is White."
The "correct" Yiddish spelling of my name is "Sheyne" - Although I have seen it spelled my way. My father wanted to spell it that way and pronounce it "Shane." My mother insisted that they add an A to the end. Apparently they argued a bit about this.
Turns out my parents spelling change is appropriate E makes an "uh" sound in Yiddish. For example Hannah is spelled "Chane" and Mama is spelled "Mame" even though they are pronounced the English way. So my father's wanting to keep the E at the end of my name and make it an E sound was incorrect. So my name is pronounced right but spelled wrong.
Is it any wonder I have trouble spelling!!!?
