Ok, so I know the title to this seems a little strange, but bear with me. I just finished reading Belinda by Anne Rice (writing as Anne Rampling). Now this was a book that was supposed to be an erotic novel in the vein of Lady C and such, not just smut. The basic premise is a painter and writer of children's books falls in love with a girl, and ( Read more... )

Hi. I found your LJ by doing a search for my own interests. In response to this post, I'm propably going to tell you way more about myself than I normally tell strangers, but it struck a chord with me.

The books sounds intriguing to me -- I can't say I've ever been tempted by Anne Rice, but you've done it. I will make it a point to read it someday. As for the premise, your explanation does not surprise me. In my high school days, I had a severe crush on one of my teachers. He was in his 40s, and the feeling was to a certain extent mutual (although not acted on). I have to say that looking back that was one of the most "erotically" charged periods of my life, even though there was hardly any touching, let alone anything more sexual. It had something to do with the tension of surpressed expression, I suppose. "Sensual" would be the perfect term to describe it, now that I think about it. Of course, I'm looking at it from the 16-year-old's point of view, but I think it would be similar in many respects from the other side. It seems to me that it's that emotional dynamic (which would be compounded even more if sex were involved) that would make me expect that those May-December were "more erotic". That may be lost in public discourse, because we try to pretent that those relationships don't exist in a "normal" framework. Come to think of it, being in love with a sixteen year old is usually pretty mutually traumatic no matter what age you are, but for different reasons.

OK, I'm done. I hope I don't come across as creepy by saying all this; I just thought it was an interesting topic.
